The Advent Narrative

The Life You Didn’t Know You Were Already Living

Advent is rushed. One glance at the calendar clearly displays Advent as a four-week season reaching its climax on Christmas. But what if Advent is not just four weeks long? What if instead, Advent is a lifetime of living?

This book marks the beginning of your chance to choose a life that is lived outward rather than inward—an invitational life where you can prepare your heart to receive the joy and hope that comes with knowing Jesus. A life that will keep you focused on Christ as you clear out what weighs you down to make room for the One who lifts you up.

“And God heard their groaning; and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob; and God saw the Israelites; and God knew.”

Exodus 2:24-25, CSB

Advent is rushed. One glance at the calendar clearly displays Advent as a four-week season reaching its climax on Christmas. But what if Advent is not just four weeks long? What if instead, Advent is a lifetime of living?

Mary Geisen has walked through years of wilderness living while working just to make it to the other side unscathed. The loss of both parents, retirement from a job she loved, and empty-nester syndrome led her straight into a period of wilderness living. God took her limited knowledge of the “not yet” and created a new understanding for walking in faith and hope. Using the season of Advent, God took the ideas of preparation and expectancy and applied them to her everyday living.

May this book lead you on your own discovery of Jesus and Advent living. May you learn a new way to live in the “not yet” and find that Jesus has never left your side along the way.

What they’re saying

In our rushed, busy lives, it’s easy to become so distracted by the things of this world that we forget all about the world that is to come. Rather than spending a few weeks each year anticipating the celebration of the first time Jesus came down to earth, The Advent Narrative challenges believers to spend a lifetime anticipating the next time Jesus comes, when we’ll see Him face to face. This book is a welcome invitation to posture ourselves toward the King of Kings and to live our lives with eternal hope.

Mary Geisen takes her readers through the beautiful story of Advent in a way that unlocks new doors and calls readers to a new postures. The way she introduces Advent as a story meant to be lived throughout the year and not just the typical four weeks leading up to Christmas, pulls readers into this beloved event in an eternal way. Mary is a natural storyteller. Her words do more than just sit on a page–they teach, inspire, and leave one wanting to know more. Scene by scene, act by act, prayer by prayer, readers will be overwhelmed by the meticulous details of the birth of their Savior. To know and understand the intimate happenings is to more fully know and understand the heart of a really good Father, one so good, He is willing to give His own Son.

The Advent life is not a dead end
but a journey toward deeper knowledge and relationship with Him.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1

For it is in the middle, the not yet, the in-between that God does some of His greatest work.

If everything begins somewhere, then creation is the beginning of everything.

Surrender is ongoing. It is not a one and done choice.

Mary Geisen is the author of Brave Faith: A 31 Day Devotional Journey. She is a blogger, a speaker, a lover of coffee and deep, soul-filled conversations. Her greatest joys are her roles as a mom, mother-in-love, and Mimi.

As a writer and follower of Jesus, God has led her through wilderness seasons, taught her how to walk in brave faith, and has drawn her into closer relationship with Him. Mary wants to live in a way that others are empowered to walk in brave faith through their own in-between, middle seasons of life.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.”
Isaiah 9:6
