He was next in the lunch line waiting patiently for his turn to travel down the silver line and pick up his tray of school lunch goodness
Peering up into my eyes, his gaze pierced down into my deepest depths
He locked his unwavering eyes on mine – brown on brown – and I had to ask “What are you doing?”
His response was pure and honest, “Looking into your soul!”
I’m not sure if my body visibly shook at his words because my first thought was – this is a nine year old – what does he know about souls?
Being a teacher who loves to ask questions, I immediately came back with “What do you see?” Â (For a split second, I wondered whether I had set myself up.)
This nine year old, this boy who loves unconditionally and adoringly, replied, “I see how much you love your sons.”
With my heart melting and tears threatening to spill out right on top of his head, I whispered – “You’re right, I do.”
Who would have thought a nine year old would reach into my deepest recesses and confidently announce a truth that is so telling? Who would have believed that our amazing God would show up through my student and remind me that He is everywhere?
Soul searching is what God does best and He displays this through Psalm 139. God craves these moments with us. God moments – grace gifts – love notes tucked into our days! God requires nothing from us for Him to love us but everything from us for relationship. God’s moments are our moments to sink into His embrace and be loved. Allow God, who knows you better than you know yourself and who has sought after you since the minute you were born, to love you and walk you through all aspects of your life. Allow God who shows up in your everyday to become your everything.
Psalm 139
You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
5 You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.
7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.
13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.
19 If only you, God, would slay the wicked!
Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty!
20 They speak of you with evil intent;
your adversaries misuse your name.
21 Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord,
and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?
22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
I count them my enemies.
23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
I’m praying for all that God tucks loves notes into your everyday and shows up just when you need Him most.
Blessings,
Mary

Thanks, Barbie! I have been blessed beyond words this school year by my nine year old friend! So glad you stopped by!
Psalm 139 is one of my favorite chapters, Mary. It’s so rich with God’s personal love for us. And your story illustrates that very intimate connection God has with you and each one of us, if we will open our eyes (brown, in your case!) to the precious gifts He gives us everywhere. Yesterday my quiet time thought was to “count my blessings.” I have to say that I didn’t do the greatest on it. I did remind myself of it later in the day and thanked God for some things that I knew were from His hand. There’s so much we miss though. But God keeps on loving us and pouring good into our lives. We are blessed! And you are a blessing to me, my friend! Hugs to you this Memorial Day! And praying a little extra prayer for your grief. 🙂
Psalm 139 is also a favorite of mine. It is a love note from God that begs to be read over and over. I have been blessed this year immensely even in the midst of grief. My nine year old friend has been a gift from God in a time when I need to be reminded over and over that I am loved unfailingly. You too bless me with your words and with the time you pour into me and my writing. I count you as a friend and for that I am grateful!
Good Morning, Mary ~ Don’t you love how kids have the most extraordinary way of communicating deep? Their words, unfiltered and full of truth hit home in the most necessary of ways …
Love this. Love that Psalm.
Yes and amen! This boy is amazing! He is autistic and has touched my life in ways too numerous to say. God blessed me with Him this school year! Thank you for coming by! I love it!
