Three years ago, I sat in a large room at a writing conference. Two ladies joined the table where I was sitting with a good friend. My life is considerably better because of these three women. Today I want to introduce you to one of these ladies, Debbie Kitterman. She has grown from feeling unsure of her gift of writing to this point in time. Today, her book, The Gift of Prophetic Encouragement launches into the world. God is using Debbie not only through the words in this book, but through the message He wants us to know.

What I know after reading The Gift of Prophetic Encouragement is how much God craves relationship with us. In that desire, God asks us to #BeTheGift and share His encouragement with those people we meet along the way. I love to encourage others, but through Debbie’s book I feel empowered to not only encourage others, but see how this multiplies as we put “courage” into others to do the same. As I reached the end of Debbie’s book, I knew that this was only the beginning. Her practical applications throughout the book spur me on to begin my own journey of prophetic encouragement.

Title: Coffee Shop Conversations

By: Debbie Kitterman

I have a confession.

I’m a people watcher.

Yes, it’s true. I love to just sit in a coffee shop or restaurant and observe people. It’s fun, it’s intriguing and eye-opening.

Not too long ago, I was sitting in a coffee shop visiting with my friend. We were discussing ministry when a young woman in her twenties approached us. She had stopped by to say hi and get a hug from my friend. I recognized her from a few months before when she had stopped by our table, but I didn’t know her name.

I watched as they chit-chatted with one another and when she was about to leave, I stopped her and said, “Something about you has changed since I saw you last. I know you got your hair cut, but it’s more like there is a lightness and a joy in you that wasn’t there the last time we saw you.”

She laughed, tilted her head and said, “what?”

I went on to explain that the last time she had stopped by our table just a few months before, she was carrying a burden and felt weighed down by life. However, today there was something different about her… something had changed. She had decided to stop running and let God in.

Wide eyed she looked at me and said, “How did you know that? I just told God the other day that I was tired of doing it my way and being rebellious. That I was giving up and would let Him have the reigns of my life.” She went on to tell me that she didn’t like to relinquish control to anyone, let alone God.”

I listened as she went on to describe some rather rebellious behavior for a believer which she had just participated in a few nights before. She said it was that night, she decided she was tired of doing it her way, that she might as well try it God’s way. But she confessed she wasn’t very good at trusting God and she was a little worried about this new found trust.

I shared a few more things with her that encouraged her in the direction she was already stepping out in. She said goodbye to my friend and then went on her way, with a bounce in her step.

As soon as she was gone, my friend leaned in across the table and at the same exact time as we were laughing said, “How did you know that!?!” It’s a running joke with my friend and me. You see, we both step out in prophetic encouragement. We both look for opportunities to bless others by speaking words of life and hope to them. Almost every single time, the first question someone asks is: How did You know that?

I have found that many do not understand that God speaks today. I know I sure didn’t understand it for the first 20 years of my Christian walk. It’s not that we don’t believe He can speak, we just doubt He will speak to us. Some haven’t experienced it for themselves and if they have, they probably didn’t recognize it as such.

This is why I wrote the book, The Gift of Prophetic Encouragement. I want people to recognize that God is real, and He wants authentic relationship with us, which involves a two-way conversation. I believe as Christ followers we need to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. We need to follow His example and speak words of hope, life, and encouragement to others. Jesus clearly modeled and said in Scripture that He only did what the Father showed Him to do and He only said what the Father told Him to say (see – John 5:19;8:28;10:27; 12:49-50).

God is speaking all the time, we just need to learn to tune into His voice. He wants to raise up an army of believers who will release hope, strength, comfort, encouragement and speak life into others. Will you link arms with others and join His army of prophetic encouragers today?
